What Is International Checkers?

International Checkers, also known as International Draughts or Polish Draughts, is one of the most important competitive draughts variants in the world. It is played on a 10x10 board with 20 pieces per player.

The larger board creates more space, more strategic planning, and more complex tactical combinations than classic 8x8 checkers. International Checkers is a game of calculation, timing, and long-term pressure.

A Short History

International Draughts became one of the major standardized forms of draughts in Europe and later around the world. Its larger 10x10 board and powerful kings gave the game a deeper strategic identity. Today it is associated with serious competitive play, study, analysis, and problem solving.

Board and Setup

International Checkers uses a 10x10 board, 20 pieces per side, only the dark squares, 50 playable squares, men, and flying kings. Each player begins with four rows of pieces. The two central rows are empty at the start, giving both sides room to develop.

Basic Rules

Men move one square diagonally forward. Captures are made by jumping over an opposing piece to an empty square beyond it. Unlike English Checkers, men can capture both forward and backward.

Captures are mandatory. If more than one capture sequence is available, the player must choose the sequence that captures the greatest number of pieces. This is one of the most important rules in International Checkers.

Kings and Captures

A man becomes a king when it ends its move on the farthest row. Kings are flying kings: they can move any number of empty squares diagonally and capture from a distance. A king can control long diagonals, attack from far away, and create multi-capture threats across the board.

How This Variant Differs from Other Checkers Games

International Checkers has a larger board, more pieces, backward captures by men, flying kings, and a maximum-capture rule. English Checkers has a smaller board, forward-only captures by men, and short-range kings.

This means International Checkers is usually more tactical and more calculation-heavy. A single forced capture line can decide the entire game.

Beginner Strategy Tips

Develop pieces toward the center but keep your formation connected. Always count capture sequences, because the maximum-capture rule means the longest line is forced. Watch long diagonals and study sacrifices, since many combinations begin by offering one or two pieces.

Who Should Play This Variant?

International Checkers is perfect for players who want a deeper, more strategic version of draughts. If English Checkers feels too small or too restrictive, International Checkers is the natural next step.
